What is One Billion Rising?
Back in 2012, a statistic showed that 1 in 3 women will be the victim of violence throughout her lifetime. With the human population edging towards 7.5 billion, this would mean that one billion females suffered abuse. This led to public outcry, which was the spark that began this movement. Every year on the 14th of February, the movement works in unison with its worldwide bodies in order to fight for justice for women and girls. Every year has a different objective, with the objective for 2017 being the fight against the exploitation of women.
One Billion Rising on Campus
One Billion Rising has caught the attention of many student activists, and this year, KSU, ELSA Malta, Betapsi, and GEM are working with Victim Support Malta in order to increase awareness about sexual and gender-based violence within the student body.
On Tuesday 14th February, a debate will be held in front of the library at 12.30, with questions and concerns being put forward by the public. The Yuppie will be present at this debate, not only covering it, but also playing our part in the fight for justice.
We encourage all students to take part in this initiative, it is truly for a good cause. This is one movement we believe the whole student body can get behind as it calls out at our basic humane instincts.
