A few weeks ago, I came across an advert on Facebook quoting “Malta’s first ever locally owned make-up brand”. I was instantly intrigued and I had to find out who was behind this. So after a bit of talking and planning, Henry and I met over a cup of coffee and discussed his brand, inspirations and creative process. Henry Galea is an eighteen year old Maltese make-up artist who has been working in the industry for the past three years and he’s launching his very own make-up brand, Heri Cosmetics, at the end of June.
Who inspired you to create your own brand?
The main inspirations were Jeffree Star and Ve Neill. From my make-up artist point of view I always followed her [Ve Neill]; she’s worked on legendary movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and Beetlejuice. Then, regarding the brand, I always followed Jeffree.
Side note: Ve Neill is an awarding winning make-up artist who also worked on the first two Hunger Games films, Mrs Doubtfire as well as Edward Scissorhands amongst others.
What are your three favourite makeup products?
Lipstick, eye shadow, and highlighter for sure. Applying foundation makes our skin matte so you need some highlight to bring some life into it. Then I go above and beyond where I’m literally a light bulb.
Side note: Henry will be releasing two sets of lipsticks with different formulas: matte and matte metallic, lip glosses, and an eyeshadow palette.
What was the best part of your creative journey and what was the toughest?
The best part was working on the products for three years and seeing them come together until you reach the final product, it’s very satisfying.
The toughest was finding a laboratory. What a task! A lot of companies’ minimum order quantity is like ten thousand items – I could not do that. I managed to find a company with which I could negotiate a bit. They gave me the ingredients list, I did the research and that’s why it was a lengthy process. I would need to substitute the ingredients, change the formula. Everything is vegan and cruelty free, I tested the products on myself. I never had a rash or anything but at first the formula was so intense that the red pigment [in the lipstick] wouldn’t come off. Later, I adjusted the formula a bit so it’s easier to remove but it’s a one swipe application and you can literally go surfing and it will not smudge.
Where do you want to see yourself five years from now?
In five years I’ll be twenty three, so it’s my lucky birthday. I want to at the top, really successful, but I want to see myself in a place where my family won’t have to work. The dream is to buy houses all over the world so that I can just grab a plane and have a nice place to stay.
Heri Cosmetics’s website will be launched on the 29th June 2018, so save the date and subscribe to his mailing list through HERE!
