The University of Malta Futsal Team yesterday blew Swieqi United away in a well-contested semi-final, to qualify for an historic final in the FMA Knock-Out Competition.
The Knights beat Mriehel ESS 6-4 in the first round to then set-up a clash against Valletta FC in the Quarter Finals. There they shocked the Citizens, who were recently crown Elite Champions – recognising them as the best Futsal team on the island this season, beating them 4-2 to set up a clash against Swieqi United.
That clash was played out yesterday. The Knights were aiming to bounce back from a disappointing end to their league commitments after defeat in the first stage of the Division One Play-Offs; and they managed to do so in style.
It was Swieqi who took the lead early on however, with Chris Cardona scoring after two minutes. Alex Ellul however equalised for the Knights, before Gary Inguanez gave the University team the lead just before half time.
Six minutes into the second half, Dusan Rakic, who joined the Knights from Hamrun in January, scored the third goal; a goal which was followed by another strike from Shawn Deguara four minutes later. Swieqi United then reduced the gap after Neil Cauchi scored an own goal. With only 49 seconds left on the clock however it was the University team who got the final say in matters as Rodney Debono made sure of a 5-2 win with a long distance goal into an empty net.
This result sets up a mouth-watering clash between the Knights and Luxol, who will be looking to overcome their own disappointing end to the league season, having lost the league title to Valletta. The final will be put the University team just one game away from their first ever piece of silverware, and it will take place next Friday!
