Last week, UoMR (University of Malta Racing) – Malta’s very own Formula Student Team competed in the British Edition of Formula Student which took place in the Silverstone Circuit.
The team is made up of over 35 passionate students who have been working hard all year in preparation for this event. Formula Student is a prestigious international competition which brings together top universities from around the world, who are tasked with the design and production of a Formula Style racing car.
The competition encompasses all aspects of Engineering, involving a number of static events which include a business and design presentation, as well as a cost event in which the team must account all its costings in front of a panel of strict judges. The Dynamic events will then push the cars to their limits, and include an acceleration race, a skid-pad, a single-lap sprint and The Endurance – the ultimate test of reliability.
Following their competition last year, UoMR have spent the year testing and optimizing their current racecar. A number of improvements were made in various areas, including a complete redesign of the turbocharger setup, a new water cooling system and a more rigid chassis coupled with a newly designed, lighter pedal box.
With a very tight budget compared to other teams, the Maltese managed to finish 29th out of 81 teams, and finished the Endurance event for the first time, being one of only 24 who successfully completed the event. Not only is this their best result so far, but the team has big plans for their future cars.
This all would not have been possible without the University of Malta and its Research Trust (RIDT) , and the team’s University Advisor, Dr Ing. Maurizio Fenech. The team’s main sponsors were also imperative to the success of the venture and they include The Ministry for Education and Employment, Enemed e-power, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, SKF, Silvercraft Products Ltd, PwC Malta, Bahco Tools, Attrans International Transport, Empav Engineering, G Molton, MCST and Zoqdi Racing Garage.
