Coming out of two defeats against Hamrun Tre Angeli and Mriehel ESS in recent weeks; the University of Malta Futsal Team knew that if they wanted to stay in the race for the final Elite Division spot; they needed a win against Qormi Futsal. They had Djordje Maksimovic and Rodney Debono back in the squad to call upon whilst Leo Muscat, Andrew Camilleri and Alejandro Rubia Morenas were all still missing due to suspensions.
Sitting slap bang in mid-table, Qormi would prove to be potent opposition. They had 5 wins and 6 losses throughout this season coming into this and were surely not going to make it an easy tie for the Students. However they would be backed as always by their contingent of loyal supporters, and indeed the rallying cries of the players before the game proved to be enough to bring a bumper crowd for the game.
Indeed the game was a low-scoring one with the game being balanced from the start to the end. However a goal in either half was enough for the Knights to take home the all important 3 points. Neil Cauchi struck in the first half, whilst Andrea Farrugia doubled the lead in the second half.
Qormi did pull one back to make it 2-1 and give the game a nervy finish; but, with the shouts and drums of the supporters behind them, the Knights held firm to hold on to a massive three points.
Full Squad vs Qormi Futsal:
Matthew Gatt, Dylan Cacciattolo, Paul Scerri, Rodney Debono, Djordje Maksimovic, Andrea Farrugia, Neil Cauchi, Martin Caruana, Jean Carl Cuschieri, Aidan Caruana, Dalziel Bugeja, Jonathan Sammut.
Going into the last game of the season, the situation is a close one. The top 5 teams of the league of 15 teams go into what is called an Elite Division. The first 4 are already confirmed with Valletta, Luxol, Hamrun and Swieqi all securing their places. The final place is still very much up for grabs. UoM sit in 5th place at the moment with a point’s advantage over Mriehel ESS and Sliema whilst Msida, who have a game in hand, are not out of the running either.
The next, and final, game of the regular season is well and truly a final and it will be played against Sliema. Nothing short of a win will be enough to secure the all-important Elite spot.
The team needs YOUR support on THURSDAY 23RD MARCH at 21:15pm at Corradino Pavillion! Forza Knights!
